Good evening, everyone and welcome to another episode of Cyber Podcast. I’m Edith your host and today we are with Oliver Anderson, the biographer of famous political figures and I am asking him about the life of a world known politician. - Hi and thank you, Oliver, for joining us, we have a lot of questions about Sir. W. Ch., because I am sure he was the one who changed the fate of the world in the Europe’s darkest hours during WW2. - Good evening and thank you for your invitation. To answer your question, I have to say that yes indeed. An inspirational leader who managed all the events at the time cleverly. - Do you think he was a great leader? - Well, he was able to manage situations skillfully but there were some flaws, as well. Nobody is perfect, anyway. - Let’s start with when he was younger, can you tell us about his childhood? - He was born on 30th November 1874 in Oxford shire to a wealthy, aristocratic family, he was Anglo-American as you know. Yes, he was. His father was British and mother was American. - Oh, I didn’t know his mother was American?!! - Yes, she was. He joined the British army when he was only 21. He participated in Britain’s war in Sudan, India and Second Boer War. - Wow really, I never dreamt he was in the army. - Yes, sounds unusual to me as well to some degree, but don’t forget that during his service he would write his experiences about war so, later he became a famous war correspondent. - Oh, another surprise! A soldier and now a journalist. - Actually, he wrote books about his campaigns. - But, what made him a politician? I think this is a question for me and our listeners. - Well, he used to have different positions in the government during the WWI and WWII and since he was born into an aristocratic family so, he easily paved his way through politics. - Hm...quite expectable. Oliver, we would like to know more about his life style. What was it like? - I should say that he had some exceptional habits. - You mean he was strange in some way? - Well, I can’t say they were unusual habits as you said. I think everyone has a different life style which relates to their personality, and he was not an exception in this way. However, some of his habits were considered peculiar. - So, what are those strange habits? - Well, you cannot believe it but unlike many people in high-ranking positions, he didn’t use to be an early bird, he would stay in bed late. He would wake up at 11:00 in the morning and would have his breakfast in his bed. - That sounds incredible.... A prime Minister who wakes up at 11:00.....Odd, isn’t it? - Well, for your information, I should say that he used to work hard but in his own way. - Blimey, difficult to figure it out. - Well, I agree. مثل .he used to work hard یا ”.he would have his breakfast in bed“ زمانی که در مورد کارهایی حرف می زنیم که در گذشته بصورت مکرر و از روی عادت یا روتین تکرار میشده ان ولی دیگه اتفاق نمی افتند و ترک شده ان از ساختار used to یا would بعلاوه فعل استفاده میکنیم. تفاوت بین would و used to هم در اینه که would بیشتر در بیان خاطرات گذشته استفاده میشه و فقط با action verbs بکار میره اما used to هم با action verbs و هم با state verbs استفاده میشه. - To tell you the truth he was a night owl, he would stay awake all night long.... - (Chuckles) just like me, not an early bird at all... - You know he used to work efficiently. - Then, I think he did not sleep much, did he? - Well, listen to this. If I say that he had an afternoon nap for an hour you may get even more confused, I suppose. - Siesta! That is what they call in Spain! But wait a minute, getting up at 11:00 a.m. and then again afternoon nap.... ?!! - Yes, he enjoyed his siesta as you said.... and being the wartime Minister....hard to believe..... - Yes maybe a catnap refreshed his mind. - It is possible. - Now, I’ve listened to some of his speeches in the Parliament, he was quick witted without a doubt.... - He was, and a great orator, he made very inspiring speeches at the Parliament, and this one that you’re going to listen to is one of the very nice ones, fantabulous I can say! He made this speech to the House of Commons on 4 June 1940. - So, let’s listen to it. - Yeah, that’s a good idea. (The speech) - Very encouraging indeed, I think his speech mobilized the whole nation against any offensive. - I think so too. Very strong and you know that we can find the will in his voice. - Exactly, yeah. بسیج کردن به انگلیسی میشه mobilize و تهاجم میشه .offensive - Now, what other characteristics made him different from other politicians of his time? - Sense of humour. As simple as that. - Sense of humour???!!!! How come? - I think it is quite obvious, he was a skillful orator, and also a writer so, his mastery in language made him have a quick wit. - Wow...very interesting. Can you tell us a story of his sharp wits? - As a biographer I cannot verify it is real or not, but it’s become one of the funny conversations between him and Lady Nancy Astor when he was a member of Parliament, let me tell you about it... Once they had an argument, with this lady I mean and the Lady told him:” If you were my husband I’d poison your tea.” And guess what the answer was. Churchill: If you were my wife, I’d drink it. - Yeah, that’s very funny. - (laughs) So quick witted, I really didn’t want to be in her shoes. I heard another one as well when he said:” The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes." - Oh yes, you cannot underestimate fools. But yes, it is believed he said that. And did you know that he used to paint? - Did he? Strange, it is! - Yeah, yeah...he was a great painter in his way and also, he was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1953 for his historical and biographical work. - Marvelous!!! that is just wonderful. He was one of a kind I believe . I always remember him with his iconic cigar. - Yes, his iconic cigar, the Cuban. This is another habit or I should say bad habit he had, he’d smoke 8 or 10 cigars a day. Can you believe that? - No way!!!! 8 to 10!!! - It is unbelievable. And you know that, he was a legendary drinker, he used to drink a lot. - Wow, heavy Drinking and heavy smoking, they must have affected his health, I suppose. - Yeah, probably, once he was talking to Gen. Montgomery and general boasted that he never drank and he never smoked and he was 100 percent fit. Do you know what answer he gave him? - Well, I don’t know maybe he said “I envy you?” - No way, you know that he was much more stubborn than this. On the contrary, he replied “I drink and I smoke and I am 200 percent fit”. مثلا he was a legendary drinker یعنی به نوشیدن خیلی زیاد معروف بود. - Well, I think we can talk about him for hours and hours but unfortunately we are running out of time. Oliver, I should thank you so much for attending this interview. - That was my pleasure. - So, back to you dear listeners, could you guess who the interview was about? I guess the clues were quite obvious.....and I believe you guessed it right; Sir. Winston Churchill the former Prime minister of England. Well, if you’re hearing this message, it means you have been with us through the entire episode, for which we are absolutely grateful and would be even more grateful if you could leave us your reviews on the podcast.
