When you see someone speaking English fluently, how do you feel or what do you think? Do you envy them and wonder how they made it so far? Well, people, based on their learning styles, may have different study methods, so, in this podcast we are going to ask some of our best teachers for their advice on the topic. Are you ready? Hey guys and thank you for joining us today. [everyone responds] E: Edith A: Alireza Sh: Shabnam S: Shirin H: Hossein E: Let me begin with Alireza. First off, how are you today? A: I’m doing quite well, thanks for asking. E: It’s really nice to have you hear. Let me start with this question: how long have you been a teacher? A: Well, let me see, I’ve been teaching English for more than 15 years now. E: Oh, wow. Quite a long time and so much experience! A: [chuckle], well you can say that again. E: Alireza if you were to give just one piece of advice to our listeners on how to improve their English and speak more fluently, what would it be? A: English is a skill – just like, say swimming - studying will only get you so far. You have to do it to learn it. If you want to improve your listening, well you have to listen a lot, and you have to listen to different types of material, especially authentic ones. Sh: Yeah, you’re right. It works wonders. Shirin: Yeah. Zhubin: Exactly. The same goes for speaking; unless you actually talk, your speaking will not improve. E: Hm…very interesting. Now, what type of students will benefit from this type of…I mean from this tip more? A: I don’t think it’s limited to a certain type of learner. Rather, different learners will find different ways to practice. For example, as mentioned, you have to listen to improve your listening. Now, what you listen to, well… that is up to you. E: Thank you so much, Alireza. It was such an interesting idea. Now, let me move on to Shabnam. E: How did you reach this level of English proficiency and how did you begin your journey? Sh: Well, truth be told there was a bumpy start before I hit my stride. I must have been 6 years old when I started learning English, in fact I was pushed by my older brother. Shirin: Really? E: Oh….how sweet! Sh: Yeah, he bought me a young learner English course book, which I don’t remember its name, and taught me the words and grammar structures out of context. Poor old me! Since he was not trained to be a teacher I didn’t quite relate to the way he used to teach me. But in all fairness I owe my success to him,.. E: Oh…you’re such a good sister! and to give him his due right, he did his utmost to hammer home grammar points. To cut the long story short, when I grew older I planned to learn it in an enjoyable way. I learnt that progress in a foreign language does not come from fits and starts, so I decided to establish a focused study routine for myself. E: Hmm…Wow, amazing. But what does a focused study plan mean really? Sh: In order to learn a foreign language what you need is exposure to that language. Have you heard of passive exposure? By passive exposure I mean listening and reading in the target language. I remember I totally immersed myself in watching American series and listening to songs in English. I picked up a lot of words and expressions and I jotted them down in a notebook, which I still have. In order not to be a passive learner I also recorded my voice and talked in English. A very useful routine… E: Yeah, I agree, definitely. Sh:… Yeah, was to say everything first in my mother tongue and then in English in that way I could find what words or expressions I did not know. Also, one thing to remember is that we should never trade off variety for consistence. What I mean is make your learning fun, joyful and varied to avoid boredom. E: Oh, I couldn’t agree more on this. The more enjoyable the learning, the more easily you will learn. Sh: Let me share one joyful way to speak English more fluently. Have you heard of tongue twisters? Alright. Well, tongue twisters are a great way to practice and improve pronunciation and fluency. Listen: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers Where’s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked? E: I don’t know. I don’t know how to say that. It really twists my tongue. Sh: That was pretty hard. So the principle is if you want to master a foreign language you shouldn’t squeeze it between other tasks in fact you need to make it your top priority. E: Exactly!... incredible tips you shared. Thank you so much, Shabnam. Sh: My pleasure. دقیقا تجربه شبنم رو من خودم هم داشتم. هر چه بیشتر بخونید و گوش بدید راحت تر ساختارها و کلمات رو یاد میگیرید. و خب ضبط کردن صدای خودتون زمانی که انگلیسی صحبت می کنید هم یک راه فوق العاده موثر هست که هم در تقویت اعتماد به نفس بهتون کمک میکنه و هم در speaking و pronunciation . E: Now, Shirin, let me ask you the same question. When and where did you begin your journey and how long did it take you to speak like you do today? Shirin: looking back at previous years, English was a big concern for me when I was a teenager. Little English did I know, so I was encouraged to give some intensive courses a try. I attended several workshops and courses and despite all odds I could make it to the advanced level. More importantly, through extensive reading I could learn new words and expressions of English in context. I kept on studying and focusing in what I wanted and now I am who I am. E: And if you were to give our listeners one piece of advice, in terms of fluency, what would it be? Shirin: Well, fluency is an issue which multitudes of Ss grapple with. I would simply say “don’t be afraid to make mistakes.” If you want to be fluent, you’d better use the TL whenever you are in a multilingual environment. This way, you’ll get to know your strengths and weaknesses better and as a result you’ll be able to feel free to speak English. E: Yeah, I agree, definitely. Don’t forget, your goal is to deliver a message, so do it! I guarantee the progress. However, practice makes perfect and through it you can make sure everything is perfect. E: Awesome. You guys have such great tips and suggestions that I really feel like going back to school and studying English. [chuckle] A: I know, right? Sh: Aren’t you sweet? A: There are always new things to discover and learn. E: Exactly, and how excited you feel when you do learn something new. E: So, Zhubin, hi again. Zhubin: Hi. E: and thank you for joining us today. You tell us. What do you think is the best way to improve our fluency in English? Zhubin: Well, as as far as I’m concerned, speaking a language is not producing words and structures. It’s a lucid process of brain. Shirin: That’s interesting. Zhubin: You need to be relaxed and confident while speaking. That’s the main important thing. You have to convey the message. That’s the most important thing. Sh: Most definitely. Zhubin: when we talk about fluency in speaking, it means to produce the language with the fewest pauses. A fluent speaker has the ability to transfer the message in the most appropriate, natural way. A: You can say that again. Zhubin: I think one of the most important things to consider in practicing fluency is to put all the anxiety and stress away. The feeling that one might not understand us is a big obstacle. And try to relax and say whatever you want to. Hesitation and doubt is not suggested at all. As a speaker don’t try to think or even make structures in you mind beforehand. Keep that in your mind that you might forget a word. Instead of trying to remember the word try to use another synonym. But don’t make many pauses. Because the one who’s listening to you is getting tired and, to tell you the truth they are not willing to listen to you anymore. Your body language and facial expressions help you a lot to tell others what you really mean. E: I’ve had that experience too. And it works wonders believe me. Zhubin: And, in short, don’t think too much and try to let the words and structures come out of your mind without thinking too much about them. The flow goes. Don’t try to correct yourself while you’re producing the language. What I can tell you is, your message has got the first word to say. Then move forward without thinking too much. That’s what I can tell you about language fluency. E: Wow, wonderful ideas. I believe employing even just one of these methods can push learners forward in their journey to learning English, since they are all tested and tried and can guarantee a great headway. They say the hardest step is always the first step! So, dear listeners, since you’ve already overcome the first step, the rest is just trying and experimenting. Just remember, people have different preferences and learning styles and you need to discover yours. So, never be afraid of trying and making mistakes. I had a bumpy start . یعنی شروع سختی داشتم . زمانی که روی غلتک می افتید و کاری رو به راحتی انجام میدید، می تونید بگید I hit my stride . وقتی سعی می کنید چیزی رو توی کله کسی فرو کنید یا بهش یاد بدید میگید hammer home something . وقتی خودتون رو غرق کاری میکنید میگید I immersed myself in something . و زمانی که با مشکلات دست و پنجه نرم میکنید میگید I grapple with something, with problems . سعی کنید که این اضطلاحات رو توی پادکست پیدا بکنید و چندبار تکرارشون بکنید. همیشه تمرین و تکرار بهترین راه یادگیریه. امیدوارم نکاتی که توی این پادکست گفته شد بتونه در یادگیری بهتر مهارت زبان انگلیسی بهتون کمک کنه. حتما ما رو در جریان یادگیری و پیشرفت خودتون قرار بدید. منتظر خبرهای خوب شما هستیم . So dear listeners, thank you so very much for listening to this podcast this far. Please make sure to let us know about your progress and your ways of testing and trying English. Looking forward to hearing your good news. Until then…bye.
