Hello and welcome to the very first all English episode from radio Westphalia. We have decided to dedicate this episode to a prominent notion in international commercial law and that is lex mercatoria. Hope you will enjoy it. The term lex mercatoria or law merchant signifies a concept encompassing a set of legal rules that are not limited to borders of one country. Lex mercatoria can be described as a body of rules developed by merchants based on custom, industry practice and general principles of law that is affirmed by the national courts. This term had been used during the medieval and early modern times by merchants in Europe. We must point out that there have been many descriptions of this term provided throughout history, and some of these descriptions have contrasting elements.
